Summary
Introduction. Breast milk and breastfeeding best meet the needs of the baby. In general, Polish children are breastfed too shortly.
Aim. The aim of this study was to determine the length of breastfeeding of children from urban and rural areas, as well as to identify the factors motivating to start and continue breastfeeding.
Material and methods. The research material was a group of 200 mothers of children born in 2002-2008. The study was conducted using anonymous questionnaires.
Results. In the study populations, most women naturally fed for one year and more. For 95% of women from the city and 75% of women from the countryside motivating factor for breast feeding was health benefit for baby and mother. For a large group of interviewed women, especially women living in the city, source of information on breast feeding was the press and literature.
Conclusions. Mothers in rural areas more often and for longer time feed their children naturally. In rural areas the primary source of information about the benefits of breast feeding are the health workers (midwives, nurses). There is a need for more education on the benefits of natural feeding both for mother and child.
