Summary
During pact several dozen years the growth of prevalence of fungal infections in people, characterised by severe clinical course, has been observed. The problem of growth of the number, intensity and recurrent character of fungal infections is also related to patients who use prosthetic restorations, in particularly in people with decreased immunity, in course of systemic diseases. Due to largue number of failures in treatment of Candida-associated denture stomatitis and also their recurrent character it is crucial to search the new, effective antifungals. The aim of this work was estimation of in vitro susceptibility of yeast-like fungal strains, obtained from direct mucosa swabs taken from oral cavities of patients using prosthetic restorations, to the tea tree oil – natural preparation having antifungal effect. The research covered a group of 93 patients. Clinical symptoms of denture stomatitis were diagnosed in them. Mycological tests were performed with the method of direct swab taken from oral mucosa, which resulted 99 yeast-like fungal strains obtained from the cultures. Activity of the tea tree oil was analysed in the antifungal susceptibility tests in relation to cultured and model strains. On the basis of performed laboratory mycological tests, the growth of yeast-like fungi was diagnosed at 79 (84.95%) among 93 patients, from who oral mucosa swabs samples were collected. In own tests, laboratory estimation of effectiveness of natural antifungals in relation to yeast-like fungi showed varied susceptibility of 99 strains to tested preparations. Among all examinated tests, the tea tree oil characterised with lower effectiveness. Due to lower activity of tea tree oil in relation to yeast-like fungi, seems to not be proper to consider possibility of using them in Candida-associated denture stomatitis.
