Summary
Introduction: Dentistry has mainly used the same techniques of 2D imaging since the first intraoral radiograph obtained in 1896. From that moment on, several imaging techniques were introduced to dental practice, those include panoramic imaging, computed tomography ,and digital imaging. By the end of the twentieth century it has become obvious that Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging may be the next advancement.
Overview of the literature: The aim of the study was to discuss the role of CBCT in the periodontal diagnosis, treatment planning and assessment of implemented therapy.
Conclusions: For periodontal disease, CBCT seems to be promising in the diagnosis of loss of the crestal bone, dehiscences, fenestrations defects and in the diagnosis of furcation-involved molars. It may indeed replace intraoral imaging for the assessment of periodontal architecture.
