Summary
Shepherd’s purse is a common weed, which therapeutic properties are not yet very well known.
The active compounds of Capsella bursa-pastoris are: amines, aminoacids, flavonoids, aliphatic and aromatic acids, glucosinolates, essential oil, vitamins, minerals and alkaloids.
Shepherd’s purse has been used for ages in Asian and European medicine, mainly for treating different types of bleeding also as a diuretic and astringent. In vitro and in vivo studies confirmed that shepherd’s purse affects the smooth muscles of uterus, may cause reduction of the permeability of blood vessel, and exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. There is no data about clinical studies regarding the herb. Nowadays Capsella bursa-pastoris is used internally and externally to treat different types of bleeding eg. menstrual bleeding, bleeding from the nose and in the injuries of the skin. It is also used in homeopathy. Low toxicity of its extracts was observed on in vitro studies. There is no evident data about the side effects of shepherd’s purse and its herbal preparations are considered to be safe for use. The use of shepherd’s purse herb was approved by the European Commission.
