Summary
Pine oil is obtained by the steam distillation of needles and twigs from a Pinus sylvestris . Major constituents of the oil are: α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, Δ3-carene and limonene. Essential oil is a colorless or pale yellow liquid with strong, dry-balsamic turpentine-like aroma. Its possess wide therapeutic effect, e.g. expectorant, antineuralgic, cholagogue, choleretic, diuretic, rubefaciens, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. Its natural insect repellent and insecticides. A total of 51 strains of yeastlike fungi isolated from oral cavity from patients with candidosis, with dental prosthesis or apparatus appliance, respiratory tract and 5 standards strains were tested. The susceptibility (MIC) yeastlike fungi to pine oil was determined by means of plate dilution technique in Sabouraud’s agar. The inoculums contained 105 CFU per spot was seeded with Steers replicator upon the surface of agar containing various oil concentrations and oil-free agar plates (the strains growth control). Incubation was performed for 24 h at 37°C in aerobic conditions. The MIC was defined as the lowest concentrations of essential oil that completely inhibited growth of the strains. The results indicated, that the most susceptible to pine oil were strains from the genus of Candida kefyr and Candida tropicalis. The MICs for 50% of strains were 7.5-10.0 mg/ml. The strains from genus of Candida albicans were less sensitive. The growth of 36% of these strains were inhibited within the range from 10.0 to 15.0 mg/ml. But for 32% strains MIC was > 20.0 mg/ml. The strains of Candida humicola were the lowest sensitive (MIC > 20.0 mg/ml). The pine oil showed moderate activity against tested yeastlike fungal strains.
