Summary
Introduction: Risk factors are characteristics that have a casual relationship with the development of a disease and risk assessment is an important component of modern periodontal therapy. The reported risk factors for periodontal diseases are: a patient’s age and their gender, social status, genetics, periodontal pathogens, the smoking frequency, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, stress and immune system disorders.
Overview of the literature: The aim of the study was to discuss the evidence supporting the link between progression of periodontal disease and a patient’s age, tobacco smoking, diabetes mellitus and the presence of abnormal oral environment.
Conclusions: Having identified risk factors in a patient, a treatment plan to modify, control or eliminate most of them can be implemented, all of which will help reduce periodontal risk.
