Summary
The use of fluoride during posteruptive period plays an important role in reducing the frequency and intensity of dental caries. Topical application of products containing high concentrations of fluoride is the most effective and safe method of prevention and treatment of early stages of dental caries. Fluoride promote remineralization, inhibit demineralization and the metabolism of bacterial plaque. Currently available professional topical fluorides containing high concentrations of fluoride intended for professional use or at home independently by the patient are fluoride varnishes, gels and foams. The main fluorine compounds are NaF, amine fluoride, acidulated phosphate fluoride and stannous fluoride. On the basis of the literature the paper presents indication for the application, effectiveness and security restrictions and prevention using products containing high concentrations of fluoride in children and youth.
