Summary
Introduction. Breast cancer is a major health problem in all developed countries. Factors that increase the risk of breast cancer are: age, genetic predisposition, the number of births and dietary factors. Eating amounts of vitamin D has a protective effect in chemoprevention of breast cancer.
Objectives. The objective of this research was to become aquainted with patients’ knowledge of the vitamin D role in the chemoprevention of breast cancer.
Material and methods. A group of 200 female patients was interviewed by means of the author’s own survey in which specific tools were used to become aquainted with female patients’ knowledge of the vitamin D role in the chemoprevention of breast cancer.
Results. The analysis of the results shows that 190 (95.0%) of respondents did not know about the protective role of vitamin D in breast cancer chemoprevention. In this survey 190 (95.0%) of respondents did not know what is the recommended daily intake of vitamin D in the diet.
Conclusions. 1. Patients did not know about the role of vitamin D in chemoprevention of breast cancer. 2. Female patients were not aware of the need to consume the Recommended Dietary Allowance of vitamin D in the diet. 3. It is necessary to change the eating habits of Polish people due to reduce the number of new cases and deaths of civilization diseases.
