Summary
Introduction. The aim of this study was qualitative and quantitative evaluation of diet in particular children’s homes in Warsaw.
Material and methods. The ten-day menus from each institution were analyzed and the results were compared to weighted average standards which were calculated taking into consideration number, age and sex of control group. The diets were also estimated qualitatively in other ways for example with Bielinska Test or Healthy Eating Index.
Results. The results showed that none of institutions realizes diets according to established standards completely. Most of deviations concerned low content of folate, D vitamin, calcium and potassium in menus, as well as excess sugar, sodium, cholesterol and saturated fatty acids. The study proved that insufficient amount of fruit and vegetables is served. Mistakes in the nutrition of children from orphanages may result in health problems caused by insufficient supply of components which are responsible for proper bone mineralization (D vitamin, calcium), or excess consumption of elements causing overweight or obesity (sucrose) and circulatory system diseases (sodium, cholesterol and saturated fatty acids).
Conclusions. The results of this study suggest that improving and controlling menus in children’s homes is necessarily. People who are responsible for children’s diet should be well educated in this area.
