Summary
Introduction. One of the biggest health problems of today’s highly developed and industrialized societies is the hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. To a large extent, it also affects the Polish population. The risk of hypertension increases with the coexistence of factors such as obesity, increased body fat proportion in the total body weight and advanced age. Risk groups also include people with the so-called high-normal blood pressure, which is not diagnosed as hypertension.
Materials and methods. Pilot group consisted of 35 women who participated in the “Effective Slimming” programme. The program involved performing aerobic exercises in a specific regimen and compliance with designated individually balanced diet. Before joining the program, all participants were tested for blood pressure and resting heart rate and in terms of the percentage of fat in total body weight. These tests were again performed after the program.
Results. As a result of aerobic exercise and the prescribed diet, a statistically significant change (p < 0.05) in the values of blood pressure, resting heart rate and percentage of fat in total body weight was observed in the pilot group.
Conclusions. The application of aerobic exercise and controlled diet is an inexpensive, generally available treatment which is highly efficient in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
