Summary
Helicobacter pylori infections are a serious worldwide health problem. The most effective therapy, consists of three drugs: two antibiotics and inhibitory substances of acid secretion in the stomach. Unfortunately, in the course of treatment often occur side effects, which include taste disturbance, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Thus, natural substances commonly found in nature may be an interesting alternative to antibiotics in the fight with this dangerous bacteria. Recently, probiotics have been proposed as a new method in the treatment of the infection, too. Activity against H. pylori may have secondary metabolites occurring in some plants, such as herb spices, vegetables belonging to the botanical family Brassicaceae, Cistus laurifolius, Larrea divaricata etc. A separate group of compounds, that can be used in future to develop new drugs to fight the infection of H. pylori, are the essential oils. Also, some substances in mushrooms may be helpful in combating diseases of the stomach. The growing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics and increasing consumption of “green products” creates the new possibility of using this type of compounds for the removal of microbial infection. This article is an overview of natural resources generally available, safe and combat bacterial infections, especially H. pylori.
