Summary
Osteoporosis – the “epidemic of the XXI century” – is a serious social and medical problem. Contemporary standard of preventing and treating this disease is an oral/intravenous drug therapy with bisphosphonates. Jaw bone osteonecrosis is a rare, but very serious complication of the bisphosphonates therapy. The aim of the first part of this article is to review literature on osteoporosis as a disease, its etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. The article contains informations about osteoporosis risk factors and modern strategies of its prevention.
