Summary
Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (roselle or red sorrel) is a one-year shrub cultivated in tropical countries. Calyces of roselle, called Hibisci sabdariffae flos, are rich in organic acids, flavonoids, anthocyanins, polysaccharides and minerals. Anthocyanins are responsible for the characteristic red color of acidic water extracts, used as refreshing beverages. In vitro as well as in vivo studies and clinical trials carried out in recent years proved antihypertensive, antibacterial, hypolipidemic, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective, anticancer, antioxidant and weight loss facilitating activity of the Hibisci sabdariffae flos. Due to their ability to inhibit the activity of α-amylase, extracts from hibiscus calyxes are recommended in slimming diets. Roselle is characterized by a very low degree of toxicity and can be safely used for a long period of time.
