Summary
Introduction: Numerous studies showed that the most important factor influencing human health is lifestyle, defined as conscious choices of everyday behaviour. Environmental and genetic factors, and health care system activity are less significant. A faulty lifestyle causes a decrease in physical and psychological ability of young people, which is not without an effect on their further life.
Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate chosen lifestyle features of students of the Medical University in Bialystok taking into consideration health-promoting behaviours and anti-health attitudes.
Material and methods: The questionnaire survey involved 320 students (251 women and 69 men) of the Medical University in Bialystok. Students involved in the study answered a set of questions concerning chosen eating habits (the number of meals and additional eating between them), physical activity, smoking cigarettes, and drinking alcohol.
Results: Among studied subjects negative dietary habits were observed (skipping meals, additional snacks between meals, mainly sweets). Study also showed a low level of physical activity, and a high level of alcohol consumption independently on sex of studied subjects. The results showed that 5% female students and 9% male students regularly smoked cigarettes. Almost every fifth student claimed smoking cigarettes occasionally.
Conclusions: It is necessary to intensify activities towards improving state of knowledge, and change health attitudes of examined students.
