Summary
Inflammation is a process in which the body’s immunological system protect us from different infections and injuries. This process is mostly based on activation of immune cells, which release pro-inflammatory substances with multifunctional effects (different cytokines and chemokines). The most important role in inflammation plays also the arachidonic acid pathway which produces different classes of end product: prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Nowadays, a lot of herbal remedies are widely used in alternative medical therapies for rheumatologic disorders (which are mostly based on inflammation process), because of antiinflammatory, antirheumatic and analgesic activity and scientific evidence for their efficacy.
Herbal remedies commonly used in the treatment of rheumatologic diseases generally contain tubers of Harpagophytum procumbens, cortex of willow bark (Salix alba) and also rhizomes of Zingiber officinale. There are a lot of in vitro and in vivo studies which confirm their antiinflammatory and analgesic activity. That kind of herbal products can be regarded as an alternative for nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and are often an effective pain medication treatment option. Nevertheless, definitely more detailed studies concerning the mechanism of action, drug-drug interactions and toxicity of this products should be performed.
