Summary
Cardiovascular diseases are the first cause of morbidity and global mortality. Coronary artery disease is a large medical, economic and social problem. A large proportion (approximately 80%) of premature coronary artery disease events are believed to be preventable by modifiable lifestyle behaviors, including a healthy diet. Tea, next to water is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. Growing evidence has established a close relationship between the consumption of green tea and protection against cardiovascular diseases. The cardioprotective effect of green tea can be attributed to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antithrombotic, vasorelaxation and anti-angiogenic properties. This article is a review of literature concerning the opinions on effects of green tea consumption on the prevention and development of coronary artery disease.
