Summary
A considerable interest in finding out about various phytonutrients, consumed in the habitual diet is observed. Consumption of grapes, grape extracts or grape products such as red wine has been showed to have many beneficial effects in preventing the cardiovascular diseases. However, also the grape seed may be considered as a rich source of a variety of biologically active substances, that may be important in health maintaining and preventing against various disorders, including diseases related to the cardiovasculatory system. Grape seed polyphenols mainly include catechins, procyanidins, phenolic acids and resveratrol. Grape seed oil is composed of about 90% poly- and monounsaturated fatty acids; unrefined oils contain also tocopherols (vitamin E). A wide range of bioactive substances present in grape seeds, determine their cardioprotective and vasoprotective properties. The favourable effects of these compounds are partly attributed to their antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity. This review presents the available evidence suggesting that the biological actions of some grape seed components may be beneficial in the protection of the cardiovasculatory system.
