Summary
Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (baikal skullcap) is one of the most promising herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Research evidences suggest that baicalin, wogonin and baicalein may have anticancer, neuro-protective and antiatherosclerotic effects. Radix Scutellariae derived antiproliferative flavonoids, induce programmed cell death in variety of cancer cell lines (MCF7, leukemia HL-60, malignant glioma). Treatment of transgenic mice with Scutellaria baicalensis inhibits tumor growth. According to animals studies, flavonoids have anti-arteriosclerosis action, due its anti-inflammatory properties. Baical skullcap root contains 26 bioflavonoids with recognized strong antioxidant effect. Skullcap flavons used to treat allergies, especially baicalin and wogonin are known to reduce inflammation. Baicalin inhibits growth factors and stops angiogenesis. In reverse, wogonin stimulates cells growth and it has a hepatoprotective action. S. baicalensis could be considered as a potential therapeutic agent in inflammatory and cancer treatment.
