Summary
Introduction: The effects of smoking on human health are serious and in many cases deadly. Quitting makes sense for many reasons but simply put: smoking is bad for health.
Aim: The aims of the study are as follow: to evaluate the problem of smoking as a habit and its role in oral and systemic disorders, to determine factors that cause people to smoke, the reasons for quitting and the part of medical practicioners in this process.
Material and methods: The study population consisted of 100 patients of Department of Periodontology WMU. The patients filled in a questionaire and subseqently they underwent extra and intraoral examination.
Results: Study revealed that smoking is the most significant risk factor of periodontal diseases (75%). Interviewers claimed that they reach for ciggarete to calm down (46%), as well as out of habit (33%) and boredoom (21%). Smokers suffered from the following disorders more often: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease 17% (0% among non-smokers), tumors of gastrointenstinal tract 13% (0%), hypertension 29% (9%), myocardial infarction 17% (6.25%). Cigarette users had higher prevalence of gingivitis 17% (9%), severe periodontitis 64% (45%) and hiperceratisis of oral mucosa 25% (3.12%). Unfortunatelly, only 70% of GP and 10% of dentists persuaded their patients to quit the habit. Sadly less than 20% of them gave the information how to do it.
Conclusion: The problem of tobacco is still underrated. Cigarette smoking has been linked to increased risk of systemic disorders and is a major cause of periodontal disease. Dentists and GPs should exert considerable pressure on quitting methods.
