Summary
Introduction: Proper feeding of the child is necessary for the general development, including the development of the oral health. A diet that provides all elements needed to growth , as well as the order and type of entering new foods and their texture affect the development of stomatognathic system and prevent carious disease. Note on multifactorial etiology of decay, and on the role of nutrition in its prevention.
Aim of the study: Analysis of the correlation between feeding children under 3 years of age and the frequency and intensity of the carious disease.
Material and methods: The survey study included 100 children (54 boys and 45 girls) aged from 12 to 28 months ( patients of Department of Pedodontics Dentistry IS WUM in Warsaw). Clinical trials evaluate the ratio of the intensity of the decay (puw), superficial indicator intensity of the decay (puw p), and were supported by questionnaire research of parents. Parents answered questions related to the diet in the infantile period and after infantile period.
Results: In the group the value indicators of puw and puw p were: puw – 3.03, puw p – 5.6. The results were higher among girls and higher in elderly children. Frequency of decay in the test group was 55%. Dependency on the intensity of the process has been found from the diet of children both in the infantile period and after the infantile period. The factors which have the greatest importance were: the way of feeding in the infantile period, the time of feeding with spoon, supplementation of vitamin D.
Conclusions: Recommendations of the pediatric on the feeding of young children has an impact not only on general health, but also on the health of the mouth. It appears that the time of making changes in the way of feeding (introduction of food other than milk, way of feeding, elimination of breastfeeding/bottle) has a significant impact on the development of tooth decay among youngsters.
