Summary
Introduction: The use of bleaching agents increased recently for improvement of natural dentition.
Aim of the study: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of tooth whitening on color, microhardness and surface profile of resin composites.
Material and methods: Material tested included Herculite XRV (A2), Kerr – H group, and Amelogen (A2), Ultradent – A group. Twelve resin cylinders of each composit, 5 mm in diameter were prepared, polished and mounted in acrylic blocks. Samples were pre-measured for color (CIELAB, Spectro Shade analyzer, MHT Optic Research AG), surface microhardness (HMV-2000 Shimatsu 200g) and surface roughness (TOPO 01P V3D). Opalescence X-tra Boost was used as a whitening agent, according to the manufacturers recommendations. Following treatment specimens were re-measured as before.
Results: Bleaching treatment produced insignificant changes in color of H and A tested groups. With respect to surface profile and microhardness observed changes were also clinically insignificant in both groups.
Conclusions: The influence of bleaching agent on color, microhardness and profile of selected resin composites was negligible.
