Summary
Introduction: One of the fundamental rights of the patient is the right to privacy while undergoing treatment performed by the dental staff. The privacy is an extremely sensitive, confidential and individual aspect of life for each patient.
Objectives: The objective of this research was to evaluate to what extent a patient’s right to privacy is respected during his/her dental treatment.
Material and methods: A group of 265 patients treated in Wojewódzki Specjalistyczny Szpital im. dr Mikołaja Pirogowa in Łódź was interviewed by means of the author’s own survey in which tools were used to assess the appropriate exercising of the patient’s right to privacy in dental treatment. The necessary statistics were conducted by means of STATISTICA 7.1 and EXCEL 2008 programmes.
Results: The analysis of the results shows that 238 (89.81%) of the patients regarded that a patient’s right to privacy while undergoing dental procedures was respected. 27 (10.19%) of the respondents were of a different opinion.
Conclusions: A right to privacy during dental procedures is one of the fundamental patient’s and human rights. Dental staff must fully respect this patient right in dentist surgeries. People who deny the right to privacy during treatment in both private and public health institutions will be prosecuted in accordance with the civil code.
