Summary
Although it could be quite accurately identified and described changes occurred in the immune system in people with Recurrent Apthous Stomatitis (RAS), the causes of these disorders still can not be clearly identified. It is believed that they may be caused by different components, such as fatigue and stress, bacterial factors, viral factors, hormonal discorrelations, allergy or food hypersensitivity, abnormalities in nutrition and metabolism, genetic factors (family predisposition), immunological Cross-reaction between Streptococcus sanguis and mitochondrial heat shock protein, or group of factors acting simultaneously. In womens are also taken in to account the phase of the menstrual cycle, taking of oral contraceptives or other hormonal disturbances on the ground.
It is important to try determine the cause of observed changes in the immune system before possibly immunomodulatory treatment in patients with RAS. If one of the factors taken into consideration strongly affects the immune system of treated persons with RAS the treatment can not lead to the desired effects, especially in a long term perspectives (recurrent eruptions).
