Summary
Indications and guidelines for dental radiological examination are used to increase effectiveness of the dental treatment and to reduce risk of radiation for the patient. Guidelines are established as a help for practitioner, but the dentist should every time individualized his decision for the use of radiographic examination. The author compared the newest guidelines for dental radiographic examinations of European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (EAPD) and American Dental Examination (ADA). Due to newest literature there are no indication for routine systemic (screening) radiological examination at asymptomatic children, although we can see some pathologies on x-ray before they can be clinically visible. Bite-wings examination is especially useful in early detection of caries at interproximal (also oclusal) surfaces. They are more indicated at some age group, like: 5 years, 8-9 years, 12-14 years. Even then the decision about making x-ray can be done individually, after clininical examination, evaluation of patients medical history, family records, previous examinations and evaluation of caries risk.
Using the equipment of good quality, following rules of radiation protection and taking out all the information possible from already done x-ray examination should be the standard routine.
