Summary
Introduction: The solidity of fixation between a tooth and an orthodontic bracket is the basic condition to obtain successful results in ortho-surgical treatment of impacted teeth. Orthodontic bracket is being fixed to the orthodontic appliance by means of wire or elastic binding. Forces properly applied make the tooth erupt till the teeth ridge. Strong connection of a bracket provides successful orthodontic treatment and eliminates additional surgical procedures.
Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess in laboratory conditiona the factors responsible for brackets detachment.
Materials and method: Incisors, canines and premolars extracted due to orthodontic or periodontal indications were chosen for the study. The teeth had unharmed coronal part. The total of 45 experiments were done. Orthodontic brackets were fixed with self-curing SmartBond cement. Experiments were conducted in resistance device TestQ/10 applying single axis stretching forces. The subsequent parameters were measured: the force level which caused the bracket to detach, the strength of tooth-bracket connection during primal and secondary fixation of the same bracket and relation between the force direction, in relation to tooth surface, and the value of detaching force.
Results: Mean detaching force for brackets fixed to labial tooth surface was 73N. Brackets fixed to palatal surface were lost by applying 29N in average. In comparison with the labial side fixation, the force needed to detach a bracket from palatal side of a tooth was 60% lower.
Conclusions: The forces causing detachment of a correctly fixed bracket are high and practically not exceeded during orthodontic treatment. In case of poor compatibility of tooth and bracket surfaces the binding resistance decreases considerably.
