Summary
Introduction: Infection at the site of surgery is the most frequent complication concerning patients hospitalized in surgical wards.
Aim: The objective of the study was the monitoring of the frequency of infections at the site of surgery.
Material and methods: The study was conducted in the last quarter of 2008, in the Independent Public Health Care Facility in Kraśnik, with the use of ‘Surgeries and Procedures Chart’, containing data concerning the type of surgery and periprocedural management. For the analysis of data the ‘Post-Operative Wounds Observation Chart’ was also applied, containing the description of the type of surgery, the complications occurring, and laboratory diagnostic methods. In addition, the patient’s medical records were used, as well as the documentation concerning hospital infections.
Results: The three-months analysis showed a small number of wound infections in relation to the number of surgeries performed: 3.4% in October, 2.3% in November, and 3.6% in December.
Conclusions: The prevention of infections at the site of surgery requires the consideration of all potential sources of infection. Data should also be verified concerning various methods of prophylaxis of this type of infection, and the most effective procedures selected.
