Summary
Introduction: Lip carcinoma is observed in Poland rarely and constitutes from 8 to 12% of all cancers appearing within the area of the head and the neck. Exposition to sunlight is considered one of the carcinogenic factors in the etiology of this carcinoma.
Objectives: The objective of this research was to examine patients? knowledge concerning the carcinogenic influence of sunlight on lip carcinoma.
Material and methods: A group of 300 patients treated in Doctor Pirogow?s High Specialized Hospital in Lodz was interviewed by means of the author?s own survey in which tools were used to examine patients? knowledge concerning the carcinogenic influence of sunlight on lip carcinoma. The necessary statistics were conducted by means of STATISTICA 7.1 and EXCEL 2008 programmes.
Results: The analysis of the results shows that 285 (95.0%) respondents are not aware of the carcinogenic influence of sunlight on lip carcinoma etiology. Among 300 respondents, 15 (5.0%) stated otherwise. The results of the survey demonstrate that 23 (7.7%) had the physical examination done by their doctors during dental treatment.
Conclusions: The results of the research demonstrate clearly that patients are not knowledgeable about a carcinogenic influence of sunlight on the formation of lip carcinoma. An early diagnosis of lip carcinoma and starting the adequate treatment offer a good chance of full recovery. Routine dental physical examination of a patient should include lip palpation. Dentists should inform patients about a carcinogenic influence of sunlight in etiology of lip carcinoma and promote a healthy lifestyle.
