Summary
Introduction: The prevalence of dental erosion in patients with eating disorders has been investigated in many studies but in Polish dental literature it has not been analyzed at length.
Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to investigate to existence of modifying factors potentially related to dental erosion in saliva in patients with anorexia and bulimia.
Material and methods: One hundred and forty two individuals, aged 14-24 years were included in the study. Eighty two of them were patients with diagnosed eating disorders and 60 were the control group. Prevalence of dental erosion and selected parameters of saliva was analyzed.
Results: Thirty four patients with bulimia and 10 patients with anorexia showed erosion involving mostly enamel, localized especially on lingual surfaces of upper incisors and occlusal surfaces of lower molars. A significant difference in stimulated and unstimulated salivary flow rate between patients with eating disorders and the control group was detected. On the basis of a quantitative analysis of selected biochemical parameters of saliva a higher concentration of calcium and urea in bulimic and anorectic patients was stated.
Conclusion: There was no any correlation between the occurrence of dental erosion and analyzed the selected parameters of saliva in patients with eating disorders.
