Summary
In this paper world-wide changes in perinatology, as well as changes in Polish obstetrics, which took place mainly at the end of the second part of the last century, were described. Progressive development of medical sciences in the 20th century resulted in the medicalization of the natural event as giving birth. As a consequence of that, pregnant and parturient women were being treated almost only in a subjective way, as biological incubators, with excluding their psychical and social problems. The ongoing dehumanization of childbirth finally had initiated the process with the aim of changing the role of woman from the subject into the object of labor. As the effect, a lot of aspects associated with the course of labor, as well as with the whole perinatal period, have changed. In this publication attention was paid to the possibility of undertaking free delivery position, and the possibility of using various equipments which facilitate delivery. Benefits of: the presence of a friendly person during labor, of water labor and water birth, labor analgesia, rooming-in system and natural breast feeding, were described. Attention was turned also to the liberalization of the rules of visiting mothers and newborns during their hospitalization. It is need to underline, that the main goal of the activities at the delivery ward is to assure safety during the delivery period, which is the most dangerous period in human's life. The base of realization of this aim is an appropriate organization of modern delivery ward, with not only adequate medical equipment, but also with proper dealing, marked with humanism, and supporting family affections. Yet, childbirth is not only physiological and somatic event, but also psychical process in which social, psychological, cultural and moral elements are gathered.
