Summary
Background: Pathologic tooth migration (PTM) is defined as a change in tooth position that occurs when there is disruption of forces that maintain teeth in a normal relationship. Prevalence of tooth migration among periodontal patients has been reported to range from 30.03% to 55.8%.
Aim: Evaluation of a PTM prevalence among patients with periodontal diseases and of correlations between PTM and chronic or aggressive periodontitis.
Materials and methods: 156 individuals (25-71 years old), who were referred to Department of Periodontitis and Oral Diseases, Medical University of Warsaw, with periodontal problem. Clinical examination was performed to diagnose chronic or aggressive periodontitis and confirm or decline PTM. Questionnaire about prevalence of migrations, cause of periodontal visit and evaluation of teeth esthetics was gathered.
Results: PTM are observed in 72 patients (46%) with periodontitis. Among patients with chronic periodontitis (127 individuals). PTM occurs in 51 individuals (40%); in group of 29 patients with aggressive periodontitis PTM occurs in 21 individuals (72%).
Questionnaire shows that 40% of patients notice tooth migration in the course of 5 last years, in 30% of patients tooth migration was an esthetic problem, and in 25% of patients migration was the main motivation for referring to the Department.
Conclusions: PTM is a common complication of periodontitis and is often the motivation for patients to seek periodontal therapy. PTM is twice as frequent in patients with aggressive periodontitis as in chronic periodontitis cases.
