Summary
The deciduous dentition caries is a frequent phenomenon in the Polish society, therefore in children aged 6-7 years it attains almost 100%. Caries begins on the occlusal surfaces of deciduous molar teeth which is connected with the presence of deep fissures in which food debris is deposed. This tendency is facilitated by the proximity of the dentin – enamel junction and weaker mineralization in comparison to other parts of teeth. Due to the fact that the procedure of fissures sealing is charged with a high risk of failure, it is rarely conducted in deciduous dentition. Taken all of the facts mentioned into consideration, fissure sealing in deciduous dentition must be discussed in terms of caries prophylaxis.
Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate whether fissure sealing prevents caries progression in the group of young children.
Materials and methods: A material called Helioseal F Pen/Ivoclar Vivadent/was used for fissure sealing in the number of 42 teeth in 15 children.
Results: 86% of the sealed teeth remained free of caries in the nine month period of observation. Only in 2% of cases caries begun on the occlusal surface of the deciduous molars.
Conclusions: Fissure sealing is a satisfactory method of caries prevention in young children.
