Summary
Gymnema sylvestris is a dendritic climbing plant, growing in southern India and in south-east Asia. Its leaves have a very intensive, bitter taste. Chewing the leaves decreases craving for sweets. Main active ingredients are gymnemic acid IV, which slows the process of absorption and inhibits re-uptake of glucose in skeletal muscles, and chromium, which is a part of GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor – one of the most important hunger and satiety controller), controlling the way insulin works and influencing balancing of blood sugar levels. In Ayurvedic medicine, it is applied in other ways, whereas European medicine makes use of its anti-diabetes and slimming properties. Numerous scientific studies confirm the effectiveness of this resource when used in combination with chemical medicines and insulin.
