Summary
Diabetes mellitus is a common metabolic disorder that leads to very serious complications such as: diabetic nephropathy, neuropathy, retinopathy, cataract and diabetic coma. There are two main types of this disease: type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Type 1 diabetes is caused by autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells and is treated with insulin injections. Early stages of type 2 diabetes are treated with synthetic oral hypoglycaemic drugs. In prevention and complementary therapy in early stages and of type 2 diabetes phytotherapy may be beneficial. For several plant materials hypoglycaemic effect had been found both in animal studies and in clinical trials. Although some of them have not been tested clinically but have been used for a long time in traditional medicine. Among medicinal plants that may be efficient in insulin – resistance and in treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus the most popular are: Galega officinalis L., Phaseolus vulgaris L., Trigonella foenum-graecum L., Medicago sativa L., Morus alba L., Zingiber officinale Rosc., Zea mays L.
