Summary
Ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is a well known plant, utilized and studied for many years. In ancient times it was used as spice and medicament, being used, for example, against nausea and rheumatism. Ginger was also used to treat respiratory diseases or as an antidote for snake bite. It is also considered a strong aphrodisiac. Currently, studies have confirmed the healing effects of this plant. Several discoveries and clinical studies prove that ginger is a plant with a broad medicinal use. In the last few years many studies about antioxidant features and anti-emetic effects of ginger were published. Moreover, the species has low toxicity, what provides safe usage. Because of its healing properties, new studies and researches are conducted constantly, focusing on the potential therapeutic application of the species.
