Summary
The presented paper is a review of literature applying to Hapagophytum procumbens DC. (Devil's claw). It characterizes a morphological-anatomical appearance of this plant and its phytochemical composition. The main biologically active compounds of the examined plant material are iridoids (aucubine type), e.g. harpagoside (0.1-3%). The above mentioned group of compounds determines broad pharmacological activity of H. procumbens. Iridoids, with their ability to block activity of cyclooxygenase and fatty oxygenase of arachidonic acid, display strong anti-inflammatory and anti-rheumatic mechanisms. According to the literature of the subject, extracts of H. procumbens show painful osteoarthritis and anti-arthritic activity. Preparations containing H. procumbens extract are also used in cases of loss of appetite, digestion disorders. It is proven that methanolic extracts demonstrate activity in heart disorders. The extracts also show antifungal activity against Penicillium digitatum and Botrytis cinerea. Additionally, they act cholagogum and cholareticum and reduce concentration of cholesterol in blood. According to the literature concerning the phytochemical composition of H. procumbens, the plant may display multiple pharmacological activity. Currently, it is the most made use of in locomotor system disorders.
