Summary
Good interpersonal communication is of supreme importance in medical care. This is evidenced by the research described by the author of the article, confirming the clear and positive relationship between good communication with outpatients and the advancement of treatment. The author focuses, in the article, on the precondition for good communication with the patient, which is the proper proportion of object surface, related to the characteristics of medical care actions taken and the subject plane – related to the characteristics of the sick person's consciousness, his or her thoughts and feelings.
In line with the basis thesis proposed in the study, the effective interpersonal communication takes place when two of the surfaces mentioned – object and subject ones – come in contact, in the proportion as necessitated in the situation at hand. The author illustrates this argument with examples taken from hands-on experience, which points to the therapeutic role of the personal plane of the communication with the patient.
She accompanies her ponderings with notes related to communication with patients just before surgical operation, communication inside the team of therapists and remarks regarding training in effective communication in professional relations.
