Summary
Hypoxaemia is a life-threatening condition. It is particularly dangerous in the postoperative period as it adversely affects the cardiovascular, respiratory and central nervous systems as well as surgical wound healing. Postoperative hypoxaemia is divided into late continuous (between 2-7 day) and late episodic (between 2-5day). Prophylaxis of hypoxaemia involves the selection of high-risk patients (obesity, COPD, sleep apnoea, receiving opioids, undergoing abdominal surgery), postoperative recovery in high dependency units (HDUs), oxygen therapy based on pulse oximetry monitoring. Postoperative surveillance should be continued for 2-3 postoperative days – if required.
