Summary
Cosmetics are substances used to clean, beautify and provide a fragrance of the skin. Those products have to keep the skin or hair in a good condition. Due to their complex composition, they may be a potential source of many allergens. Eyelids are common localization of the cosmetic dermatitis. Characteristic condition in this area like thin stratum corneum, exposition on eye blinking and sweat cause higher absorption of allergens. The most common allergens are fragrances, preservatives, pigments and vehicles of the mascaras, eye shadows or eye creams. Women are more often affected. Due to visible localization it may be problematic for the patient. There may be severe or chronic type of eyelid dermatitis caused by cosmetics. In severe cases usually erythema, oedema and vesicles are observed. In case of chronic lesions scaling and hypertrophy of epidermis are typical symptoms. Patients usually complain of burning and itching. Clinically it is impossible to differentiate allergic contact dermatitis that results from hypersensitivity reaction type IV from the eyelid dermatitis caused by irritation. Differential diagnosis should include atopic dermatitis and psoriasis vulgaris. In this study the most common allergens of cosmetic eyelid dermatitis are presented, as well as diagnostic procedures and treatment options.
