Summary
Pityriasis rosea is an acute erythematosquamous disease commonly observed in children and young adults. Most frequently it takes the mild course and is characterized by oval salmon-pink macules on the trunk and proximal part of the extremities, that usually spare face, scalp, palms and soles. The widespread skin lesions are preceded by the solitary "herald patch”. Although the etiology is not sufficiently elucidated, the infectious cause of the disease is considered. The prodromal symptoms, clinical features resembling those of the known eruptions and many epidemiologic data suggest the viral origin of the disease. Recently, numerous data indicate the involvement of the human herpes viruses, especially HHV-6 and HHV-7, although the other viral agents, including HBV, HSV-1, HSV-2, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, parvovirus B19 are being taken into consideration. Pityriasis rosea is connected with some clinical difficulties due to its various forms and atypical manifestations, tendency to mimic other diseases and to develop exacerbation into erythroderma. Moreover the need of treatment or applying the particular therapeutic options, including antiviral drugs and UVB phototherapy, is controversial.
