Summary
Introduction: One of the primary patients' rights is a right to being informed about the degree of the risk and possible complications following dental treatment. In the 21st century it is the patient that accepts or rejects a suggested method of medical intervention.
Objectives: The purpose of this research was to evaluate whether dentists respect the patients' right to information about a degree of the risk of a dental treatment.
Material and methods: A group of 400 patients staying in Pirogow Hospital in Lodz was requested to fill in a survey prepared by the authors, in which tools were used to examine respecting by dentists the patients' right to information about a degree of the risk related to dental treatment. The necessary calculations were done by means by followings packets: STATISTICA 7.1 and EXCEL 2008.
Results: The analysis of the research shows that 77 (19.25%) of the respondents were informed by their dentists about the risk and possible complications accompanying dental treatment. Among the 400 respondents, 323 (80.75%) answered that the dentists had not informed them about possible risk and complications connected with the suggested dental intervention.
Conclusions: The results of the survey conducted among the patients staying in Pirogow Hospital in Lodz point to a serious problem related to observing by dentists a right of a patient to being informed about the risk of a suggested dental treatment. A right to information about a degree of risk in suggested dental treatment is one of a primary patients' right.
