Summary
Aim: In the logopaedic and medical literature, the opinions concerning the interdependence between the occurrence of malocclusion and articularory disorders are inconsistent. The aim of this study is to explain the genesis of simultaneous occurrence of the morphological disorders and defects of pronunciation. This can lead to a discovery of more efficient ways of counteraction to these disorders.
Material and methods: A study was performed on 50 patients of a dental ward for children, both with and without malocclusion. The anatomy and motorics of the articulatory organs, as well as the articulation and mispronunciation of the phones has been examined. Occlusal relationships and functioning of the masticatory system has been taken into account. Medical history was gathered before each examination.
Results: Speech defects has been observed in 57% patients with malocclusion. Malocclusion has been observed in 68% patients with defect of pronunciation. The analysis of the results of the study allows to explicitly attribute the most important part in the etiopathogenesis of malocclusion and defect of pronunciation to functional disorders of lips and tongue.
Conclusions: No direct interdependence has been observed. However, there exist some etiological factors, the simultaneous occurrence of which leads to the development of both malocclusion and defect of pronunciation. Understanding of what these factors are will result in a better cooperation between specialists, shortening of the duration of the treatment and minimization of the risk of relapse after the treatment is over.
