Summary
A considerable achievement over the past few years has been the practice of enriching tooth fillings with strontium. These works led to a separation of a new group of materials, the so-called calcium-free glass ionomer cements (Ca-free GIC), termed also as strontium glass ionomer cements.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possibility to integrate and the penetration depth of strontium released from glass ionomer Fuji VII into the tooth hard tissue.
24 samples of rat molars with installed fillings from this substance were subjected to the qualitative microanalysis under scanning microscope using the EDS technique in experimental conditions.
The research results presented in this study indicate the possibility to discharge strontium ions from glass ionomer cements and to integrate them into the tooth hard tissue structure. Their amount depends on time and distance from the filling. It can be expected that introduction of strontium ions into filling materials can improve their cariostatic properties and contribute to effective prophylaxis of dental caries.
