Summary
Introduction: First permanent molars (FPM) are very important in the dental arch. The teeth cut between 5th and 6th year of life, although they still are incompletely mineralized. Lack of proper hygienic and diet habits in 12 year old children and presence at chewing surfaces of the teeth difficult to clean grooves cause very early caries development.
Aim of the study: The analyses of the state of first permanent molars in 12 year old children in Lodz Voivodship between 1978-2008.
Material and methods: The research involved 133 12-year old children, chosen by random sampling, living in Lodz Voivodship. A clinical oral examination was performed using the artificial light in school consulting rooms. We examined the existence of dental caries, fillings and fissure sealant. Caries intensity described with calculation of DMF, DMF6, treatment index and treatment index of FPM was determined. We calculated also the number of DMF in accordance of used preventing method including fissure sealing. We compered our resoults with resoults from 1978-2008.
Results: The caries frequency in the examined group was 69.2%. The DMF index was 2.11. Fissure sealant was found in 38.34% of examined children. The state of FPM had significant influence on the value of DMF. The DMF6 index was 1.72. The research estimated lower value of DMF in a group of children who had their FPM sealed (DMF=1.45). The treatment index of FPM was 0.58.
Conclusions: The morbidity of caries is decreasing in Lodz Voivodship. Fissure sealing in the first molars is a valuable part of the preventing program.
