Summary
Introduction:The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of knowledge about caries and its prevention among secondary schools pupils. The oral hygiene habits were also estimated.
Materials and methods: Questionnaire survey was conducted among 170 respondents aged 12-16 years (Avg. 14+/-1). Two groups were examined – pupils of urban junior high school (101 children, girls 49.5%) and pupils of rural junior high school (69 children, girls 60.9%).
Results: The level of respondents knowledge is on the satisfactory level. But 19% boys and about 6% girls don't know that caries may affect the general health status (p<0.01). The differences of answers depends on respondents gender. Girls more often brush their teeth twice a day (83.8% vs. 62.8%, p<0.01), paying attention to the fluorine content in toothpaste (62% vs. 42.3%, p<0.05), using mouthrinses (62% vs. 42%, p<0.01) and brush their tongues (90.2% vs. 71.8, p<0.01). 55.4% girls and 34.6% boys eat sweets everyday (p<0.01). Almost 75% of examined population are drinking regularly beverages sweetened with sugar.
Conclusions: 1. The study showed the need of diversification of educational and prophylactic programs for girls and boys in junior high schools. Educational programs should contain more information about diet. The special attention should be paid for risk caused by beverages sweetened with sugar. 2. A need of implementing educational programs designed for parents also exists. 3. The knowledge about importance of oral hygiene daily routine is still inadequate. 4. The study confirmed that patients aren't adequate motivated for treatment of caries.
