Czy lekarze rodzinni wykonują badanie palpacyjne piersi u swoich pacjentek?

Summary
Introduction: All over the world breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed neoplasms. In Poland the mortality rate due to breast cancer is higher than in other countries of the European Union. Both palpation and imaging examination of the breasts can enhance an early diagnoses of breast cancer and reduce the death rate.
Objectives: The purpose of this research was stating whether a family doctors palpate their female patients' breast.
Material and methods: A group of 500 patients staying in Pirogow Hospital in Lodz was requested to fill in a survey prepared by the authors, in which appropriate tools were applied in order to investigate the issue. The necessary calculations were done by means by followings packets: STATISTICA 7.1 and EXCEL 2008.
Results: A careful analysis of the results shows that 413 (82.6%) of the female respondents were not palpated by their family doctors. Among these female, 87 (17.4%) females replied that their family doctor had palpated their breasts.
Conclusions: The results of the survey conducted among the patients staying in Pirogow Hospital in Lodz demonstrated a serious problem connected with fighting breast cancer in medical practice. An early diagnosis of breast cancer is an opportunity of a full recovery and at the same time of reducing the death rate caused by the disease.
