Wiedza pacjentów na temat rakotwórczego wpływu zakażenia wirusem brodawczaka ludzkiego (HPV – human papillomavirus) w etiologii raka wargi

Summary
Introduction: Lip carcinoma is observed in Poland rarely. Patients with lip carcinoma are admitted to surgical departments in advanced stage neoplasm disease, what cause that the prognosis are poor. One of the etiological factor of lip carcinoma is infection of human papillomavirus (HPV).
Objectives: The objective of this research was to examine patients' knowledge concerning the carcinogenic influence of infection of human papillomavirus on lip carcinoma.
Material and methods: A group of 300 patients treated in Doctor Pirogow's High Specialized Hospital in Lodz was interviewed by means of the author's own survey in which tools were used to examine patients' knowledge concerning the carcinogenic influence of infection of human papillomavirus on lip carcinoma. The necessary statistics were conducted by means of STATISTICA 7.1 and EXCEL 2008 programmes.
Results: The analysis of the results shows that 254 (84.7%) respondents are not aware of the carcinogenic influence of infection of human papillomavirus on lip carcinoma etiology. Among 300 respondents, 46 (15.3%) thought otherwise.
Conclusions: The results of the research demonstrate clearly that patients are not knowledgeable about a carcinogenic influence of human papillomavirus on the formation of lip carcinoma. Doctors should inform patients about etiology of lip carcinoma and inform about necessity observing their lips. The role of family doctor should be promoting a healthy lifestyle.
