Summary
Breast cancer is in may countries the most frequent cancer in women. Despite of permanent increase of morbidity, the decrease of mortality rate was observed in USA, Great Britain and Scandinavian countries. The main reason of this phenomenon is the earlier stage that the diagnosis is established. The latter was achieved by expanding indications for systemic adjuvant treatment. Clinical studies and meta-analysis, that were performed, enabled optimization of adjuvant chemotherapy regimens. There are also studies going on at this moment establishing the role of new drugs, such as: monoclonal antibodies, kinaze inhibitors, factors influencing neoangiogenesis, new cytostatic agents and hormonal drugs. Despite of this unquestionable progress, the metastatic breast cancer is still an incurable disease and the treatment of patients with confirmed metastases is mainly a palliative therapy.
