Summary
Introduction. Severe sepsis remains a major cause of mortality in intensive therapy units (ITUs). The severe sepsis registry in Poland indicates a high mortality rate (56%), however the incidence of severe sepsis in ITUs has not so far been estimated in Poland.
Methods. We have assessed the incidence of sepsis in Polish ITUs. Two one-day point-prevalence studies were performed via the internet between 6th December 2004 and 6th June 2005. Fourty-eight percent of all accredited ITUs in Poland, treating 1613 patients, responded and were included in the study.
Results: 34% of patients treated in ITUs presented various forms of sepsis; 16% had severe sepsis and 6% had septic shock. From the results obtained, we calculated an incidence of 12,823 cases of severe sepsis per year (34:100,000), and 34 693 cases of all forms of sepsis (91:100,000). Since the septic patients treated outside ITUs were not included in the study, the estimated number of severe sepsis patients in the Polish population is probably 2-4 times higher than those registered in accredited ITUs.
Conclusions. The prevalence and incidence of severe sepsis in Polish ITUs are high. Because of the high mortality, the long stays in ITU, and the substantial costs, severe sepsis should be considered a major public health problem in Poland.
