Summary
New medical technologies, changes in doctor-patient relationships together with other factors are the source of numerous ethical problems in modern medicine. Such problems, e.g. finiteness of human life, euthanasia or medical futility, which particularly concern patients treated in the intensive therapy units, should become the subject of wide interdisciplinary debates.
There is the need to explain cooperatively to what extend statistical data may be useful in decision making about cessation of treatment or whether analgesic therapy sometimes accelerates death, etc.
This will prevent many misunderstandings or controversies and medical actions will be taken in the name of the patient´s good and respect for his autonomy. The dialogue between physicians, philosophers, ethicists and lawyers is necessary.
