Summary
Disseminated intravascular coagulation is not a disease but a syndrome, which is always secondary to an underlying disorder. DIC is characterized by a widespread activation of blood coagulation, which may lead to thrombotic occlusion of vessels. Simultaneously, consumption and subsequent exhaustion of platelets and coagulation factors, due to the ongoing activation of coagulation, may induce severe bleeding complication. DIC therapy consists of plasma and platelet substitution, anticoagulant treatment and administration of physiological coagulation inhibitors.
